Position Description
The Manager - Shelter & Housing, will oversee daily shelter and supportive housing operations for Lionhearts in Kingston. This role is essential in ensuring a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for guests & participants while maintaining compliance with organizational policies and standards. The Manager will supervise a dedicated team, support staff engagement, and collaborate with community partners to enhance resources and provide quality services.
Responsibilities
Operations & Program Management
- Maintain shelter operations, policies, logistics, and uphold the Code of Conduct, in collaboration with senior leadership, ensuring alignment with Lionhearts values.
- Supervise shelter and housing operations to ensure all services are delivered safely, respectfully, and effectively.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and provide emergency coverage for shifts when required.
- Respond to resident and staff conflicts, provide conflict resolution and crisis intervention, and connect guests with needed resources.
- Assist in planning, implementing, and monitoring programs that aid participants in moving toward self-sufficiency.
Staff Leadership & Coordination
- Coordinate staff schedules, review timesheets, and submit payroll information, ensuring adequate coverage for shelter and housing operations.
- Provide orientation, training, and ongoing performance management to all shelter program staff.
- Coordinate with volunteers and partners to ensure resources, supplies, and staffing are available and operational.
- Conduct regular staff evaluations and support team cohesion, providing constructive feedback and development opportunities.
Community Engagement
- Provide assistance to guests & program participants, including conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and support in accessing resources.
- Build partnerships with local agencies, healthcare providers, community organizations and stakeholders to enhance support for guests and program participants.
Administrative & Compliance Support
- Collect and maintain accurate and confidential records on shelter operations, participant files, and program data for internal use and external reporting.
- Collect statistics and prepare reports for stakeholders, ensuring data accuracy and timeliness.
- Support budgeting for shelter and housing programs and monitor expenses to ensure they align with budget guidelines.
- Ensure all shelter and housing activities adhere to health, safety, and regulatory standards.
Facility & Resource Management
- Coordinate with staff and partners to ensure the availability and upkeep of necessary resources and supplies for shelter operations.
- Conduct regular walk-throughs of the shelter to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
- Respond promptly to emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants and staff.
Balanced Administration & On-the-Floor Presence
- Balance administrative duties with floor work to maintain a visible presence within the shelter and housing units, fostering positive interactions with participants and staff.
- Maintain organized records, including financial documents, staff files, and participant records, ensuring compliance with data security and confidentiality standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience in a shelter or housing management role will also be considered.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience managing or supervising operations in a shelter, transitional housing, or related social services environment, with a proven track record in overseeing day-to-day activities that ensure individuals safety and well-being.
- Demonstrated experience leading and supervising a diverse team, including staff and volunteers, in a high-stakes environment.
Key Skills
- Crisis Management: Experience in crisis intervention and conflict resolution, with the ability to respond to emergencies and behavioral issues in a calm and effective manner.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of shelter regulations, health and safety standards, and compliance requirements relevant to housing operations, particularly in Ontario.
- Ability to build and maintain partnerships with local agencies and organizations to enhance individuals support services.
- Experience in designing and implementing programs that support participants self-sufficiency and well-being.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on empathy and professionalism when interacting with guests and stakeholders.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and shelter management software or similar databases for tracking resident information and reporting.
- Physical and emotional resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, sometimes high-stress environment, with a willingness to work evenings, weekends, and participate in on-call shifts as required.
Compensation
$57,000 - $62,000 salary based on experience, employee benefits plan, 3 weeks of vacation.
Term / Hours
Permanent, full-time, 40 hours per week
