Founded in 1990 as an Evangelical Christian Mission, Christian Charity, Canadian and US NGO. Also registered in the USA

Revenues:  $1.1 million per year

Job Purpose:      The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of The Arms of Jesus (AOJ) Children’s Mission according to the strategic and spiritual direction set by the Board of Directors. As a faith-based organization, the mandate of the organization is to operate in a way that honours Godly principles and ensures that AOJ is a good steward of the provisions, privileges and trust that the staff, students, and donors have entrusted into the hands of AOJ.

  • The Executive Director shall demonstrate biblical and ethical behaviour both personally and in business practices and ensure that their behavior and the behaviour of others in the organization is consistent with these standards and aligns with the values of a Christian organization with the Bible as its Foundation.

Reports to

  • AOJ Board of Directors and Audit Committee

Positions managed:

  • AOJ staff in Pickering, Field Directors in Guatemala, Haiti and Kenya

Qualifications

  • Ongoing faith journey in a local church community, with proven demonstration of service and leadership.
  • University degree or appropriate qualification in a related field such as: Theology/Pastorate/Business/ International Studies, etc
  • Five or more years of progressive management experience in a voluntary sector organization, pastorate, or para-church ministries,
  • Proven display of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/voluntary organizations
  • Diverse experience in federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations including: employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, charities etc.
  • Experience in project management, financial management, and human resources
  • Proficiency in word processing, excel, email/internet, publications/photoshop etc.
  • Spanish or French language skills an asset

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Vision and Leadership

  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing/updating a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization’s mission
  • Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the organization's activities; trends and conditions in the environment; and communicate regularly on revenues, expenditures, and any internal or external issues that affect the organization
  • Foster effective teamwork between the Board and the Executive Director and between the Executive Director and staff
  • In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization on behalf of or jointly with the Board when appropriate, in both written and oral correspondence
  • Represent the organization at community activities to enhance the organization's community profile
  • Act as Ambassador of the Mission to pastors, Churches and Donors

Program planning and management

  • Develop and implement an operational plan which reflects the vision and strategic plan set by the Board of Directors and the biblical mission of the organization
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate the organization's programs, services and special projects to ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board
  • Prepare and manage short term mission Teams travelling to mission fields; effectively communicate expectations for Team members travel, preparation, financing, and spiritual implications of representing AOJ at the field level.
  • Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate
  • Provide support to the Board by preparing regularly scheduled meeting agendas and supporting materials
  • Ensure that personnel, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained

Human resources planning and management

  • Determine staffing requirements, create job descriptions, recruit and train staff and implement human resources policies, procedures and practices for organizational management and program delivery
  • Maintain a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
  • Oversee a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring performance, ongoing coaching and mentoring, and conducting annual performance reviews
  • Responsible for disciplinary actions when necessary, using appropriate measures and appropriate and legally defensible procedures, in consultation with the Board.
  • Begin each week with a brief update, keeping staff aware of developments and needs in each field; and lead staff in a devotional and prayer to encourage their spiritual development and the mission of the organization

Financial planning and management

  • Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget
  • Research funding sources, oversee the development of fund raising plans and write funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization
  • Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate
  • Approve expenditures and administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization within the authority delegated by the Board.
  • Ensure that sound bookkeeping/taxation/accounting procedures complies with all governmental legislation

Working Conditions

  • Executive Directors typically work a standard work week in an office environment, but additionally will often work evening, weekends, and overtime hours to accommodate activities such as Board meetings and representing the organization at public events, fundraising and church visits.
  • Travel to donors, churches etc. across the country will be required as well visits to the Fields of service of the Mission in Guatemala and Haiti.
